The train, Kanchanaburi and the Guest house

The train to Kanchanaburi is on the other side of Bangkok so we trudged our way to the Skytrain and headed towards the river. Some times I wonder who's idea it is to lug 18 kg's across countries and call it fun? We arrived at the river in the nick of time to catch the boat up river to find our way the train station. I stupidly listened to the guy at the guest house and we ended up getting off a stop early so we had to trudge half an hour or so under grubby underpasses to find the station.
Eventually we arrived (in the rain) to find out that yet again we were a little miss informed and that the train didn't actually leave for another hour or so and we had to sit o the platform surrounded by a pack of hungry but happy dogs. The sweetest of them sat there with big "please feed me eyes" rolling and doing trick in aid of food. Yes, it worked! I am such a softy!
Finally we bordered the train and it was a little wooded carriage with big windows that opened up to the Senora. We went past some slum humpy bong style settlements and the filth and rubbish was disgusting and amazing all at the same time. I was mortified that people live like that and happily.
Eventually we passed all this and headed into some better scenery which I pretty much slept through..
On the train we were approached by a guy offering us accommodation at a fair price and we said we'd have a look but no promises. The shine still hadn't worn off from our luck on Kho Phangna with our little bungalow in paradise and we were hoping that this would be similar. We boarded a Swangthaw (Ute style taxi) and headed full of hope to our possible accommodation.
All hope was lost when we saw what lay ahead of us! A tent would have been far more glamorous and definitely far cleaner. So back in the taxi and on to a new location. Finally we found a place that seemed decent so we were happy to settle down and get some food.
Well, once we paid and shut the door to our room we realized that there was a smell very similar to rotten old footy socks. And there was more mould on the ceilings than on smelly old cheese. The disappointment of this was too much so we took a stroll and found a new place to stay and stayed there till we finally admitted defeat and had to return to our smelly damp room. The next morning we promptly checked out and headed to our wonderful new airy abode.
All was good in the world again.
