Siem Reap and Ankor
Well. What is there to say about Siem Reap?? Not a lot. The town it's self is a dingy place with unsealed roads and thousands of beggars. But I guess you have the travelers to blame for that. We are an opporunity to make money by making us feel guilty for their situation. As bad as I feel for the population in Cambodia I am not responsible for feeding the starving or helping the victims of land mines. That is the responsibility of the corrupt Cambodian government.
That said the Wat's and the Ankor temples are absolutely magnificent!
I was up at 4am to watch the sun rise over Ankor Wat and it was absolutely spectacular. I spent forever climbing over the worlds largest temple and exploring it's magnificent carvings and sculptures. I spent the remainder of the day being whisked from one magnificent temple to the next on the back of a motorbike. If it wasn't for the constant harassment from kids to limbless beggars the day would have been perfect.
I spent the afternoon at another temple watching the sun set over Cambodian rice Fields and I came across a young monk. This is a great opportunity for them to meet someone who can talk English so they can practice. Lucky for me I got the only one that spoke perfect English, was almost finished his monk studies and would be more than happy to leave early to become my "friend"!!
I nicely explained that I would love that but he would have to live in Oz and work really hard to support himself. He was a little put off but still keen to become my boyfriend. Especially when he learned I was traveling alone.
When I left with to guys I had caught a Tuk Tuk with he became very distressed and asked me why I lied to him and I had a Friend. I took a lot of explaining that you have friends and then you have A Friend!
I still felt really guilty though!
Anyway I decided that fighting off beggars at every moment really wasn't my cup of tea and neither was the grubby city of Siem Reap...So I decided to pack the pack and head to Battambang...
