Sen Monorom
Sen Monorom is a little town with little appeal but boasts to host the largest waterfall in Cambodia. To get to this waterfall you have to go via "The bastard child of the Devil himself" road. (As quoted by loney planet)
We decided to stay at the guest house that bus stopped at and we all thought we were getting a pretty good deal....Until the morning...The music, Cambodian Kariokee, was turned on full ball at 6 am in the morning. Nice!!!I was so unimpressed especially since the electricity was turned off at 11.30 pm and my room was really hot!
We, well Louise and I, moved to another guest house and then headed off to do our tour de waterfall. On the back of a moto we went. My seat felt like a piece of wood with a pineapple attached and we only had 37 kilometers to go!
We went through villages and down the Bastard road until one of us got a flat and we had to stop at a village "bush mechanic" to get it fix. One poor kid saw us coming and screamed at the sight of us. Especially when I took out my camera. I had to laugh. I geniously made little bracelets out of wool to give to the kids to fend of the begging and it worked a treat...They were happy little campers.
All good and we were off again to the waterfall.
The water fall...Name eludes me...Was rather beautiful and the drop to the second fall was really pretty especially when you scale down the side to get a better photo....Who me never!!
Back on the pineapple..I mean bike and we headed to a Village to see the how they live. The kids were so amazed to see us and were really amazed to see themselves in a camera. They followed me around the village but kept a fair distance away just encase. They don't get a lot of tourists out there and I was definitely an I saw. The kids make for really lovely photos!
Back again on the bike and we headed to a smaller waterfall were we had a swim and cooled ourselves down. Sen Monorom is definitely cooler but the relief is generally only noticeable in the evenings.
The following day we decided to take it easy and go for a 2 klm walk to the Nature Lodge for some good tucker and some Cambodian sport...Hammock swinging.
Well the 2 klm walk ended up being a 4 klm walk in the heat but the reward was worth it. The Nature lodge was beautiful and relaxing. The walk back was less than that but eventually we made it back. The cool of the evening air must have tainted our memory and we decide to head back out there for dinner. Minus Ian. Louise and I got a little lost as the sun went down and the full moon shone nice and bright. We kinda forgot exactly how far and how dark it would be! Woops. Eventually we found it, thank god. A night out in the Cambodian outback really wasn't what I had in mind!
We found out why the electricity kept going out too. The town is run on a privately owned generator and when he goes to bed, so does Sen Monorom. We were lucky the World Cup was on and he was a football fan! We had a fan till the early hours..
